Fireplace hearth regulations

UK Building Regulations stipulate specific hearth requirements for wood-burning or multi-fuel stoves. Two types exist: constructional and superimposed hearths, depending on heat output and installation. Topstak’s experts advise on the correct type and thickness for any situation

Freestanding stoves require a non-combustible fireplace hearth to protect surrounding materials from embers and heat. This hearth, whether a classic fireplace hearth or a sleek black limestone hearth slab, must clearly define areas where combustibles are prohibited. All hearths, including every hearth slab, must be robust and non-combustible, withstanding expected temperatures to prevent damage and injury.

What’s more, every hearth for a woodburning, multi-fuel stove or fireplace must be made from a robust non-combustible material capable of preventing the combustion of any surrounding fabrics and furnishings. Fireplace heaths need to be appropriate for the temperature they’d be expected to withstand in order to limit potential property damages and the risk of accidental injury.
